YSL The Shock Burgundy Mascara | First Impression | How Did It Wear?

Continuing the beauty theme this week, I have a "day in the life of a new mascara" video for you. When I went to purchase my favorite YSL faux cils burgundy mascara at Nordstrom, they were out, but they did have this new one called The Shock !

I try out the mascara in the morning and come back in the evening to let you know how it did. Plus, what is going on with my hair?! I hope you enjoy this fun video.

Yes, I loved The Shock, even more so than the original mascara. It is tricky when applying to your lower lashes, but other than that, I give it 5 stars!

If you have tried The Shock, let me know what you think. Or, if you know of any other mascara brands that have a burgundy shade, please let me know and I will try it out.

I will be going on spring break from the blog next week, so there will be no posts, but look for me back on Monday, April 17th for the long-awaited ten-item wardrobe video for spring/summer 2017!

Question of the Week

Ann Martin writes: Watermelon is such a pretty shade on you! I haven't tried Benecos lipstick... have you found it to be long-wearing?

Thank you, Ann! I do find the Benecos lipstick to be long-wearing. I really love that color. It's become a favorite of mine. I'm wearing it again in today's video.

Today, I would love to know what mascara you currently love. Do you have another burgundy mascara recommendation for me? I will see you back on April 17th for the ten-item wardrobe video. Have a wonderful week!

I am convinced that Maybelline has every magazine beauty editor on the payroll. That is the only reasonable explanation as to why Great Lash mascara gets such rave reviews. I find it to be a terrible product, and everyone I've ever known to have tried it did not like it either. My favorite drugstore mascaras come from L'Oreal... I've used many and been pretty happy with all of them. High-end I used to love Dior Iconic, but I think they changed the formulation; I don't think it's as good as it used to be.

Hello ladies, anybody have any experience with dying the eyelashes? Like with hair dye but on the lashes. Is it scary/ potentially harmful for getting into the eyes etc? I am a lady blessed with thick dark lashes and never needed mascara. But as white strands if hair are starting to appear on my scalp (at age 37) I am starting to freak out about the day my lashes turn white too. My father have the same eyes/lashes and they are snow white meaning that day will come for me too. Mascara feels so forein to me and I would honestly be freightened by myself if I saw myself in the mirror without my usual dark eyes! So I'm considering dying the lashes when that day comes. But just wondering.. Is it a good or bad idea/thing to do? Thoughts/opinions/experiences?

I personally wouldn't dye my lashes myself, but I've had them done in the salon. I usually get them done before a vacation. It give me a little extra polish, and I don't have to worry about mascara sliding down my face at the beach, or worrying about removing it while camping.

L'Oréal telescopic mascara is my go to drug store brand ... the one I mainly stick to is 100% Pure's blackberry mascara . It stays on and is easy to wash off it keeps your lashes soft . I also use 100% Pure's coffee eye cream to moisturize my eyes and lashes before I appply the mascara so it Apply's smooth without any clumps. Don't get the "Maracuja" style mascara because that one tends to clump for me. Instead make sure it says "ultra lengthening "instead! It's fruit dyed make up and it's honestly awesome

Great Lash works beautifully for my mother, but it never has for me! My burgundy drugstore go to is CoverGirl exact eyellights waterproof in Black Ruby. A dancer suggested it to me for my son's wedding a few years ago, and it has been a fave ever since. It does not come off through tears dancing, or any other activities. Nor does it bother my contact lenses. The only drawback is that if I neglect my evening toilette, it will still be there in the morning, making my lashes a bit crunchy...

YOU LOOK AMAZING in the dress and or blouse you are wearing in the video! And it is beautiful!

I tried a couple of other cheaper ones like you and have since then ditched them, I just don't like them and they are more work than they are worth to look acceptable. I went back to the one that did work, and it was actually a drugstore recommendation from you, L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, I found/find it to be great! I can't really afford expensive mascara at this time, and this is wonderful! Thank you for the recommendation. I have no idea what video or when you did it but I like it! :)

Thank you for your reply! No I wouldn't dare doing it myself either but it does sound good the salon makes a good job done then. Why only do it for vacations then? Why don't you do it allways instead of mascara? What difference is there in result/finish do you find? Or is it a matter of price?

Hi Jennifer...I've not used a burgundy mascara but I did notice in your video that you had a little difficulty while applying the mascara to your lower lids. I have been using this method for quite a while and it works really well for me. I wash and save all my mascara wands. When I start with a new mascara, I find that often the wand is really loaded with product. I transfer mascara from the new wand onto a old clean wand and I can put as much or as little on as I like. The new wand is not in contact with my lashes and I think that extends the life of the product. i had an associate at a Chanel ( I use Le Volume mascara) counter once tell me to wipe the wand of a fresh mascara with a Kleenex to eliminate the excess. I think I surprised her when I told her my trick. It takes only a second to then wash the old used wand. I follow this routine for a good month or so and then I use the wand directly out of the mascara itself. Let me know it you try this and if it works for you. Thank you for taking time to read this. AND...I will definite give the SHOCK in burgundy a try.
Thank you~~~ Sally

KL, I used to have my lashes dyed in a salon, but the color only lasts a couple weeks at best. I wouldn't worry about getting white eyelashes. Facial hair and head hair are determined by two different genes, so just because you are getting white in your head hair does not mean your eyelashes will get that way. My hair (under my hair dye) has a LOT of white in it, and my eyelashes are still brown. Also, I found that the fumes from the alcohol that was used on my lashes to open the follicles to receive the dye burned my eyes. I was also worried about getting the dye in my eyes. It's just not worth the risk to my sight. (They may SAY it's safe, but they say a lot of things on the market are safe that aren't.)

You definitely don't want to use hair dye on your lashes! Lash dye is way less caustic and only semi-permanent. You can get it done at a salon or you can buy kits on-line to do them at home. They darken lashes nicely and make them look longer since the tips do fade, but since it doesn't actually lengthen your lashes or get them to magically hold a curl, I still use mascara. (I also get my brows tinted and waxed, which I highly recommend getting done by a professional so you don't end up looking like either Marlena Dietrich or Groucho Marx.)

Ditto on the CG Exact Eyelights in Black Ruby! I tried the YSL Faux Cils and got a flaky mess. The CG doesn't say waterproof but it might as well be. It can be tricky to find so I usually buy 2-3 tubes when I do.

Thank you for being so relatable and sharing the laughs! It's good to see others sharing in mommy-life! I appreciate you. Thank you for creating a "happy place."

Hi Jennifer! I love your blog. I have been using the Sephora store brand $10 mascara, and I like it a lot. It comes in several colors, including a rich burgundy/purple that brings out the green in my eyes. I'm not sure how to link to it here, but it's called V for Volume.

I am late in saying, thanks for the shout-out for my blog post. I really appreciate it and continue to be inspired by you. I hope you have a wonderful vacation!

Best,

You were making me laugh (in a good way) when you were discovering your new hair sprouts (it's springtime, le printemps, oui?). Back to mascara, I tried the YSL in burgundy and even with my blue eyes, I loved the softness of the color. I am tempted to try the blue also sometime. I did notice that they still sell your original YSL burgundy mascara at Sephora in case this one doesn't work out for you and you must return it. I am finishing up a Tarte "lights, camera, LASHES" which is flake-free and quite nice, although it doesn't come in burgundy. Keep all your wonderful videos coming.

Hi Summer. This is a random question, but I list track of my step-sister (Summer Smith) when I was 18, and she was 10...about 28 years ago. She would look very much like you, adjusting for age. Is your birthday in October? Do you have a mom named Judy, and a brother named Zach? I know it's a long shot, but I just have to try. Thank you in advance! :)

I agree...I don't understand the hype with Maybelline Great Last. I feel the wand is awful.

Regarding people's bafflement over the hype over Great Lash: I read a book this year that was written by a former beauty editor at Marie Claire that may explain this. Those "Editor's Picks" that you see on the editorial pages? The advertisers tell them what to push; they aren't "personal favorites". There are only a few labs that make makeup, and they use the same formulas for many of the expensive as they do for the cheap. The more expensive ones may use a greater color range, but the only real difference is your perception. Mascara formulas are mostly the same, HOWEVER -- the brush makes all the difference, and it is the only part of the mascara that is patented. So if you like an expensive mascara, it is probably the brush that you are enamored with. So, just clean off the expensive brush when you use up the expensive mascara, and use it with the cheaper mascara.

I've used the pink/green Maybelline for years, but am trying a new drugstore mascara called L'Oreal Voluminous Original mascara in black/brown. So far, I really like it and I like the color too. The brush did wonders on my lashes. No maroon though.

You look very pretty on this video. The colours of your blouse, lipstick and mascara go really well on your skin tone. Looks like you truly learnt the lesson from madame chic and the green twin set episode.
Love, Isabela.

Hi K.L, I've tinted / dyed my mum's lashes and brows. I've also tried it on myself but I already have dark lashes. We both have very sensitive skin and eyes but we had no irritation whatsoever. We used the 1000 hour brand lash and brow tint. In saying that, we lose those hairs fairly often so you might have to dye more often than you might think. Hope that helps with your decision.

My lashes are sparse after the birth of my second daughter. I love the volume mascara gives me; tinting my natural lashes doesn't give me any of the needed volume. It costs me about $20 to tint them at the salon, and it lasts a little over a month. So, for me, it's not as cost effective as a tube of mascara.
